What is really interesting is you can see where the stretch of Fire in
the Hole was that was removed in 1982. If you know where to look
when on the ride you can see part of the blocked off scenes and where
the track would turn left after the burning bridge and where the track
would join up right before the final two drops.
The maintenance area for Fire in the Hole was extremely cool to go
through. As you can see by the slanted ceiling it is squeezed
under some of the rides scenes.
With a ride that incorporates a splashdown finale with water perpetually
dripping off of the trans as they loop through the structure over and
over for fifty-one years there was water damage pretty much everywhere.
To keep the maintenance area from becoming a giant puddle when building
Fire in the Hole they had the good sense to not pave the areas under the
track.
To store and work on Fire in the Hole's trains there was a siding in the
maintenance area that allowed the trains to leave the track and
transition to rollers. That is a great way to give maintenance
easy access to the wheels in case they need to be greased or changed.
