One Final Visit

Six Flags didn't completely stop investing in Six Flags America since my last visit as there were a couple of new rides added to the lineup like the Harley Quinn Spinsanity.

Six Flags has been slowly adding these Zamperla Discovery rides to their parks over the last eight years.  Six Flags America got theirs in 2021.

As you work your way on the long and sparsely filled Gotham City section of the park you come to Wonder Woman:  The Lasso of Truth.  These take you up over 200 feet and give you a grand view.  If you keep your eye open and happen to look the right way while riding it you can catch a glimpse of the top of the Washington Monument in the distance.

Being a big fan of Vekoma Flying Dutchmen coasters like Batwing, which is the final one in existence Travis was really looking forward to a few more rides.  Sadly it was closed.

Vekoma's Flying Dutchman coasters were the first coasters that really tried to give riders the feeling of flight by placing riders in a laying down position.  Once locked in while leaving the station and headed up the lift the seats had you staring up at the sky but once you crested the lift the track rolled you over into a Superman like flying position and just let you fly.  The restraints and seating were awkward but the flying aspect was more than enough to make up for the weird design.

Unfortunately Batwing was dead.  A couple of weeks before our visit the fiberglass cover for the lead car fell off during a ride which caused it to stop out on the course.  At the time Six Flags announced they were ordering a part and that Batwing would reopen.  It was closed during our visit and afterwards Six Flags America eventually notified the world that Batwing had taken it's final riders for a flight.

While Batwing was a good ride it is a great example of how Six Flags never really had a coherent plan for developing Six Flags America.  Before Batwing opened Superman was the far end of the park.  Instead of building it somewhere near the rest of the park it was placed some 200 yards out beyond Superman in the middle of a field.  It was a bit of a hike to get to it and there was nothing out there even vaguely near it.

Godspeed Batwing and Vekoma's Flying Dutchman
