What's in planning, what's being built now, what's rumored.

SDC excavation photos: 3-20-14

Postby Greg » Thu Mar 20, 2014 4:56 pm

There's a lot of earth being moved, trees cleared and the old concrete and water system from the now gone toboggan flume being cleared. These photos were taken from the towers of Geyser Gulch. Plenty of SDC management and crew were standing in the area for much of the afternoon. I'll be back at the park tomorrow and will look for any new changes.

Here are a few pics of the area being worked on from Google Earth.

The first picture is of the whole park.

Then here is the area close up.

The area is a little land locked by some of the staff parking lots but it could still fit a ride, especially if it was a sprawling one.

Now that I think about it, I recall hearing last season that an expansion/upgrade to the Geyser Gulch area was in the works. If so, this must be it. The area backs up to the train tracks and an employee lot, so I doubt it's a coaster, as space is limited. If they build a wing rider, my guess is it will be closer to the lake, perhaps to the side of P-Keg. That would allow them to extend the midway past Outlaw Run into new territory and the lift would provide a nice view of Lake Table Rock. We shall see...

Why expand the already massive Geyser Gulch? I think that is a corner of the park that could use a little something to spice it up like a coaster.

Paul, I agree. Geyser Gulch is massive and my boys love it. We spend two hours there yesterday and probably will again tomorrow. I am sick of the place. On a cool note, I can leave Rohan there and take Ryder out for some alone time. Yesterday Ryder and I ditched Rohan, Rode TNT, ate lunch, rode Flooded MIne, then returned to GG for another 45 min. Rohan LOVES it. Not sure what the park has planned for the area.

GG and the copy of it at Dollywood were neat for a little bit when Bond was young but this year when we visited I asked if he wanted to go run around it and his response was:

"No way! There's no line for Outlaw Run. Let's ride"

My boy is no longer a boy! :-)

The concepts sent out in surveys last year consisted of three different themes around a package of rides. A shot tower(presumably the SBNO S&S Tower at Celebration City) a kiddie ride and three others not detailed much in the survey. The themes consisted of a fireworks factory(seems most popular), a balloon factory and a fire station.

My speculation is that the package may be from Zamperla (shot tower aside) and may consist of an Air Race and a custom rocket themed coaster like the OCC coaster at Darien Lake. I say that because when the survey prior to Outlaw Run came out, it consisted of a woody, shot tower and a riding a horse coaster.

I think a custom bobsled/wild mouse like coaster from Mack or Gerstlauer would be grand as well for that area.

I don't see this area as a place for a big B&M though I have seen the rather compact wing at that Six Flags.

Also note that there has been talk of relocating the backstage area and employee parking for park expansion. That's the best land availible topographically speaking to do so.

I took more pictures yesterday (3-21-14) and as you can see, the area is being cleared rapidly. I asked an employee about the project and she said Geyser Gulch will be torn down in August to make way for a new kids' climbing play area. She said, "Yup, progress. You can't live in the 1880s forever."
