Negative-G Forum Link & Text Colors

Post by Paul Drabek » Wed Aug 21, 2013 9:41 pm

I have had a couple of people mention that they hate the color layout and text size here on the forums. I want to sit down and fix this but my question for you is what colors should we change them to? I was thinking of going with a dark blue for unvisited links and light blue for visited ones (basically the same as on Negative-G's main page) and making the topic titles white/grey. What do you think or do you have any other ideas?

Thanks

Paul

I'm happy with the way it is now, but that's not to say I wouldn't like a new color scheme. People's eyes react differently to color combinations so I'm not opposed to trying something new.

I was one of the ones who mentioned the colors. On my desktop, it's all good. Trying to read it on an iPad with a smaller screen and a bit of glare on the glass, though, is really difficult. Difficult enough that I generally don't read everything, only the thread or two that really demands attention.
Trying to read it on the phone? No way.

The biggest problem is the blue text on the gray background. Even on the desktop version, I literally cannot see the word "Greg" in the post above this one. I know it's Greg, so I don't really have to read it, but if that were unfamiliar text, I'd have to drag across it to highlight it just to see what it says. It highlights with a yellowish background and "Greg" pops right off the screen, easy to read.

I think that 99.9% of the legibility problems would be solved instantly with a white (or at least much lighter) background and black text. It's not the text colors, it's the background.

I like the colors as it is now, but that blue text can be hard to read sometimes.

I don't know, I kind of like the colors and things now. It just seems unique and fits the site well. Maybe a darker background could help. And then names like Greg's can just be a brighter color.

So it seems we all agree the biggest problem is blue text, so maybe change the color of site admins names to yellow? I think that would pop with the current background...

Ok...here's what I am thinking. I want to have the title text be white/light grey for mouse over/grey for visited. Text to be white. Unvisited links to be tan/mouse over a darker tan and visited links being a dark tan. The red has been grating to me as it isn't complimentary (thinking as a visual designer here) to the graphics to the site but I totally understand not wanting to go blue...although if I went any blue at all it would be a pastel. If we keep red I'll come up with some variances of it where the unvisited/mouseover/visited colors are all complimentary and instead of the red/grey/red we have going now. Colors are easy to change so whichever I do I will keep backups of each attempt and it will take a whole 5 minutes to switch it out.

I was also thinking of tweaking the text size and making it a bit bigger...what do you all think about that.

TC10K (and anyone else with a smartphone or tablet) get a copy of Tapatalk...it is for IOS and Android and I believe it is free now for the iphone (also works on an ipad). I haven't messed around with their ipad app as the iphone one works just fine on my ipad. You can log into the forums from anywhere, post a ton and even post photos from the road with it. It is a very handy app.

Have Fun

When I'm in my house, I sometimes go on -G on my IPod, and a small percentage of my posts come from my IPod.

I looked at tapatalk, but it was apparently "updated" a few days ago and lost lots of features. The general feeling is "this went from 4 stars to 1 star". I'd suggest not updating your copies if you haven't yet.

I'd be fine with a larger text size. As for blue on black, try "cyan" it's perfect for a black background. Thanks for continuing to update Neg-G.
