Navigation Suggestion

Post by OCD Posterchild » Thu Feb 16, 2006 11:32 pm

One thing I wish there were on Negative-G is Navigation bars... I wish that there were a full navigation header available to every page
for example, the links tie over into all portions of the site, with just a slightly changing sidebar. the headbar would stay the same.
It would be awesome to do this, but for now I am used to the current layout... just dont move lots of stuff around, unless its for the fullscale navigation. It would send me into shock.

Hey Brian;

I'm a little bit weary of messing around with Negative-G's layout especially in a big way as something like this would be as my current layout has worked so well for so long in the state that it has slowly evolved into over the years. My view of it is a story with each section telling the tale of my day at the park and adding a whole bunch of menus to it for one would clutter the page up and secondly I think would distract people from the story and they'd never get to the end.

Plus if one wants to get to the index where everything is easily laid out I have a link at the bottom of each and every page that takes you to the index (as well as these forums after a ton of updating this weekend). I have always been extremely cautious as to changing Negative-G because in the end I really love how it looks and is laid out.

Navigation bars are extremely helpful when trying to search for a specific aspect of a site. However, on your site it is all laid out on the index page. It would help if I did not want to go to the index page to get to your blog from the forum for example.

Maybe I'll settle with a link to and from the forum and the main site. cool?

Ugh I have spent most of my free time today adding links to the forums on all of the pages on Negative-G and I'm about half way through. Here's an example of the layout(page to the bottom). Also I have a link on the index page.

What do you think?

Hopefully I'll have all of the pages updates, my Beech Bend 2005 pictures added, Ocean City Maryland pictures added and a Voyage update by Sunday afternoon. So I'll be busy this weekend.

Have Fun

Paul

Looks good, Paul! I still would like a link from the forums to the index page. I understand that they dont create themselves, so take your time. I look forward to the updates!

Yeah I keep forgetting to finish up my Beech Bend pictures from whgen I was there in July. I'm going to put those as well as section of pictures of two of the parks in Ocean City, Maryland and hopefully I'll get a few pictures of the Voyage and other construction over at Holiday World tomorrow.

Have Fun

Paul

Part of the problem with creating a link from the forum back to the main page - well, all of the problem really - is that I can't figure out how to do it. I do most of the technical work for the forum, while Paul takes care of Negative-G itself. I know there's a way, I've seen other forums do it, I just haven't had time to sit down and really dig into the code of the forums for it. So, sorry - until a number of time-consuming issues here at home are dealt with, the forum will likely remain as it is. :-/

That's alright, Carrie. I would think that you would be able to hotlink the banner at the top or add it somewhere, but then again, what do I know?

No, you're quite correct. That can be done - I've seen it done on other forums using this same program. The problem is that this is the first time I've used this program, I'm learning as I go along and it just has to fit into the rest of my life. Which is approaching insane just lately. ;-) The place and way to do it isn't immediately obviouse to me, and I haven't found the answer in the support boards yet. When I do, I'll fix that - it just may take a while working around home and getting Bond to school with no car and all the other stuff.
