Possible New Chat Functionality - Opinions Needed

Hey everyone;

For our Sunday and Wednesday Night Chat's we have been using some free software called MChat. It's a good program (it only messes up every once in a while) and lets us chat but I have wanted something a little more advanced a while now. I love the idea of making this community more interactive and I would really love to be able to push the boundaries making it so all of us can be easier connected as a group. IMHO how all of us connect is really want makes this small community much more connected to each other than those massive coaster forums out there. This isn't about how many posts there are on the site but about how many people are friends and how many people become family.

I'd love to see features like these in a chat software:
  • Always on Facebook like Personal Messenging
    File Sharing
    Audio Chat
    Video Chat
    Mobile Chat Apps

Needless to say cool feature filled software is not free. I've actually found a couple. One of them is called Addon Chat that does the PM'ing and photos in chat as well as mobile chat (although not through a app) that will run $115 (chat software plus mobile) and there is one called Comet Chat that offers everything on my list although it is at varying cost from $49 through $500 to add the video/audio chat functionality.

My question is upgrading and adding more functionality to the forums something that you'd like and then would you be interested in kicking in a few bucks so we can get it as like many of you I live on a budget and I refuse to have advertisements here?

Let me know what you think.

Have Fun

Paul

The PMing and photo capability is a nice thing and I'd be happy to kick in a bit of coin to help with that.

Audio/video chat, though? I'm not sure the functionality is worth the extra price (not only for the software package, but for the huge increase in bandwidth it could mean). I'd imagine that it would primarily be used for one-on-one chats (the thought of everyone yakking in the chat room at once ala "The View" is not appealing at all - one of the nice things about text chat is the ability to have multiple conversations happening simultaneously across different topics without it getting unwieldy) - and for one-on-one, there's always Skype and/or FaceTime.

Hey Jim good points there. I think the video/audio chat would NOT be a good thing for the group chat but at some point it would be nice for one on one chats. I am very much leaning towards Cometchat as it has a Facebook like always on Instant Messenger one on one chat so you can see who else is on at the same time and be able to say hello and chat. I really love being able to add more ways for all of you to be able to connect and communicate and something like that would be really fun. I emailed the folks from Comet Chat to see if you can purchase some of their modules piecemeal as I would really like to have their ios/android/bb chat software so people can join in the conversations from anywhere.

Comet Chat works by having a little bar across the bottom of the window (or you can pop it out into its own window) with group chat rooms on one side and one on one chats on the other.

Here is the group chat window:

Still it would be nicer to have a more reliable (aka: actually updated once in a while) and easier to use chat software for the site. The basic Comet Chat software is $49 if you'd like to kick in for it my Paypaladdress is PaulDrabek@negative-g.com and I'll add it when I get the cash (don't worry I'm throwing in the first $10).

Have Fun!

Paul

OMG Jim thanks for the donation. I'll get the software and work on it this week with the goal of having it all up and running by next Sunday Night chat.

Look at the bottom of your page and the new chat software should be up. Let's see how it all works with chat tonight.

The chat room is working but as of right now the "Who's Online" and Instant Messenging does not seem to be.

Let me know if you all can at least see the bar across the bottom. Carrie and I can but we are admins and I want to make sure everyone can.

Illinois you may rejoice as the chat now has the "Beer" smileys (light, dark, regular) as well as the shot glass and the "Josh" foofy drink for chat.
