Negative G Park

Post by CptBeeble » Sun Feb 16, 2014 4:19 pm

OK, so here's the NL2 version of the forum game we were doing in NL1. I split it off into a different thread just in case some folks wanted to keep going with the original one.

Here's how it works in NL2:

[1] We'll all be working in "Negative G Park".
[2] The scenario will give you the setup and the mission.
[3] Build your coaster, then either post a link to your dropbox folder OR zip the park folder and post the file.
[4] The one who came up with the scenario will check the entries out (maybe a week after posting) and determine the one he/she likes best.
[5] After deciding on a winner, the Negative G Park that includes the winning coaster gets posted so the winner can use THAT park file to put the new scenario into.

Repeat.

So the basic thing is that as we go, the Negative G park will begin to fill up with the winning coasters.
It's suggested, but not required, that if you're the winner you should choose a different kind of coaster for the next challenge. Lots of variety should make this more fun!

Here's the Negative G Park and the scenario for the first coaster: Make a folder for the park, then download "Negative G Park" into it. Your own NL2 program should make backup files for you automatically, so don't d/l that one, just the original park file.

Here's the scenario:
Negative G park wants a world's-first coaster, but doesn't want to spend a fortune on it.
They opted to contact Gravity Group and construct the world's first reverse-lift wooden shuttle coaster.

The train gets pulled backward out of the station, is released, hauls through the station, and then....

...well, that's what you get to decide.

Leaving the station, train, and lift unchanged (except for colors), construct a thrilling yet budget-friendly wooden shuttle coaster.
(tunnels and terrain changes are VERY costly, so not allowed!)

...and here's where to get the file:

Of course! We'll assume that trees, plants, buildings, etc were in the park beforehand, so they don't contribute to the cost. I just started out with a clean slate so as not to hinder creativity.

The main thing is to avoid terraforming or using tunnels. Those are great fun, but in real life they are massively expensive.
Maybe with a stellar wood shuttle coaster, the park will generate enough money for tunnels on the next one!

Just for grins, I made one of my own. (Obviously not in the running for the 'contest')
I left the station and train as-is, except I ran the train backward.
I added a bunch of terrain-hugging Gravity Group-style turns and a double-down (which becomes a double-up on the return trip) then a parallel lift hill that drags the train up and releases it like a Vekoma Boomerang.

Not bad for a couple hours' work.

How about for the judging the one running the event scores the design say 1-50 and then everyone else scores the design 1-10 and then we tally them all up. That way everyone is involved and people get to see what people thought of their designs.

Or everyone grades them out of 10, and then you can get an average score of say 9.5/10.

I think you guys are drastically overestimating the number of people who are going to do this.

I think in the NL1 thread, there were a whopping three of us that played.

And YES, you can add a second lift, but with budget constraints it would be a pretty short coaster.

I ignored all of that, as my design wouldn't be entered anyway.

Here's my entry into our little contest.

Why have two lifts when you can give a wicked ride with just one. Besides only one lift half's the machinery and maintenance cost for having twin lifts. This ride gives more than one worlds first. It is the worlds first wooden shuttle coaster but it is also the worlds first shuttle coaster with a loop! Give this ride a try and we can start construction as soon as you say for a memorable addition to your new park!

Paul's file brings up an important point: When submitting your coaster, be sure to RENAME the "Negative G Park" folder before you submit. Adding your name to the front makes sense (as Paul did) so the host can remember who built what. The reason for renaming is ALSO so the host doesn't accidentally overwrite his/her existing Negative G park with one of the submissions.

I like the coaster... Nice, compact, fun.

Anyone with their hands raised, though, is gonna get splinters!

Well with a 7 year old PC running NL2 right now as my main PC died it is a little hard to troubleshoot rides. I get something like 5 frames per second when I run it.
