Redondo Beach Giant Dipper: Help needed

Post by Sora » Tue Jan 06, 2009 11:11 am

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone knows anything or has any photographs of the Giant Dipper that lived at Redondo Beach between 1925 and 1933. It was one of Fred Church's early coasters and built right on the sand, not solid ground. The only photos I've found are linked below but there doesn't seem to be one that fully shows the entrance side of the ride. I'm trying to do a recreation on NL but it's rather difficult considering the lack of photographic material of the main section. Curiously, it looks somewhat like the famous one at Belmont park opened in the same year, but the track seems a lot more complicated for Redondo's Giant Dipper.

All photos are from the USC digital archive.

Great find. Does that archive have other coaster pics from the West Coast?

The only other photo of the Dipper I believe is in William Cartmell's "Incredible Scream Machine" that showed the ride from the side. If I remember correctly it had some insane dips to it.

Have Fun

Yes. I does. Here's what happened when I typed in 'rollercoaster':

There's also this photo of Lick Pier, once a separate enterprise from Ocean Park (later Pacific Ocean Park):

The coaster in the foreground is Prior and Church's first large-scale Bobs ride, the 'Giant Dipper'. It opened just before Venice's in 1923 and was demolished in 1935, and had quite an interesting history. Steve Franks and I spent a month recreating this coaster for RCT back in July. It was fast and wicked with plenty of air-time. An awesome ride. Let me know if you'ld like some screenshots.

Btw, re: Redondo Beach GD. Are you sure you aren't thinking of this photo:

If so it's the other (front) side I need. I'll have another look through Incredible Scream Machine but I don't recall it.

Wow, a LOT of amazing finds you have truly got. I was pretty amazed when I turned out as we were able to dig so many classic photos up from the archives. : )

Edit: You have shown me that Google Book Search is SO good as well, specially when we are giving many tries to go back to the old days, about the classic things.

No, the one that I remember is shot from ground level and showed the side of the coaster from a distance.

Hmmmm. It's certainly not shown in 'The Incredible Scream Machine', I've checked every photo and in the index. It is mentioned as a P&C ride in the list on page 165, and Church is mentioned as building a coaster there a few pages later but other than that, nothing.

Perhaps it is in another more specialist book I don't have? I have the Legends of Terror book but it isn't in that either.

I say thanks as well, for being able to see the correct one soon. So hopefully that it will come over us. I am fond of that kind of thing. : )

Ok, I've been through my books and my 1300+ screen saver coaster images with no luck. The next and last thing that I can offer is to dig through my Rollercoaster back issues.

Wow, that's a lot of coaster photos! If you could search the back issues that would be very, very kind so yes please!

Many thanks,

Woodpecker.

I wish I had some fancy coaster mags, because I can feel like being a more coaster enthusiast, specially as I am trying to show how each brake and lift system works. Too bad I can't go buy either of them. : (

Did you ever manage to find that photo, Paul? If not, no worries, but I just thought I'd ask anyway. :)
