Intamin 1st Gen Freefalls...Are They Coasters?

Enthusiast coaster & amusement park chatter about whatever. If it's not about coasters & parks, it'll go to the garbage file. Keep it on-topic and flame-retardant, please.

Intamin 1st Gen Freefalls...Are They Coasters?

Post by Paul Drabek » Tue Jul 14, 2015 7:48 pm

Last Thursday we got to enjoy one of the few remaining First Generation Intamin Freefall rides which is Demon Drop at Dorney Park. It was bonds first time on one and despite being really freaked out about it he absolutely loved it and we ended up riding it well over 20 times throughout the day.

My question that I don't feel has really ever been answered is a first generation Intamin Freefall really a coaster? It has a lift, it has a track, the majority of the ride the car is powered by gravity. Yes it may be a one trick pony of a ride with a few unconventional things (lift, car, track style) but that does not preclude it from being a coaster.

What do you think and should I count my Freefalls as credits?

I never really thought about it like that. You have a really good point. I've been on two, SFOG and SFOT. But I personally wouldn't count them as credits.

If Six Flags can call a Super Looper a coaster then why not?

I have always counted Demon Drop as a coaster, because I thought it was. It has wheels, makes a circuit on its track, and has a lift hill. It also coasts, of course. Other drop towers don't do that.
Do you feel lucky, line jumper?
