Favorite Hypers/Gigas

Post by Paul Drabek » Mon Dec 08, 2014 10:12 pm

Hey everyone;

I was watching a few coaster videos this evening while working out and a video of Leviathan came up. Besides thinking about how much I'd rather be riding it instead of working up a sweat on my ski machine I started to wonder what my favorite hyper/giga 200+ foot coaster with no loops was. Here's my list:

1. Goliath at SFOG
2. Leviathan at Canada's Wonderland
3. Millennium Force at Cedar Point
4. Magnum XL-200 at Cedar Point
5. Nitro at SFGrAd
6. Phantoms Revenge at Kennywood
7. Raging Bull at SFGAm
8. Titan at SFOT
9. Diamondback at Kings Island
10. Intimidator at Carowinds
11. Bizarro at SFNE
12. Apollo's Chariot at BGW
13. Mamba at WOF
14. Intimadator 305 at Kings Dominoin
15. Goliath at SFMM
16. Ride of Steel at Darien Lake
17. Superman at SFA
18. Goliath at La Ronde
19. Behemoth at Canada's Wonderland
20. Wild One at Valleyfair

What is your list?

I couldn't put Goliath and Titan together as Titans added helix really makes that ride and the fact that SFOT does not brake that ride half as much as SFMM.

Good point Paul. SFOT is definitely the superior of the two.

I have yet to be on a hyper coaster, sadly. Based on looks and reviews, I would probably rate Phantom's Revenge as my favorite.

1: Skyrush - Hersheypark
2: Millennium Force - Cedar Point
3: Intimidator 305 - Kings Dominion
4: Nitro - Six Flags Great Adventure
5: Phantom's Revenge - Kennywood
6: Bizarro - Six Flags New England
7: Intimidator - Carowinds
8: Superman - Ride of Steel - Six Flags America
9: Diamondback - Kings Island
10: Steel Force - Dorney Park
11: Magnum XL-200 - Cedar Point
12: Raging Bull - Six Flags Great America

Skyrush is by far my favorite coaster so far. No other coaster has come close. It is the only coaster on which I held on to for dear lifebecause I was a little frightened that I'd be bucked off of the course. I can see how some might find the lapbars a little uncomfortable, but I honestly didn't notice it too much after multiple rerides and strongly feel that the ride experience far more makes up for it.

You can see from my list (and my inverted one from an earlier topic) that I generally prefer the more wild, intense rides. I do love a good, smooth course like most B&M hypers, but there are very few differentiating factors between them to make any really stand out to me (except the trim brakes on Diamondback and RB - yuck!). Bizarro would be a lot higher if it wasn't for the restraints. I loved the course but literally cried out in pain each time we crested an airtime hill. Phantom's Revenge was a nice surprise, and the double dip at the end of the ride really makes it.

Phantom's Revenge is likely at the bottom of my list. I want to like it, but all three times I've ridden it, the double-down next to the end brakes kills my back and I'm in pain the rest of the day.

Agreed about Skyrush. If you're the kind of person who loves that batshit-crazy intense, everything-coming-at-you-OMG feeling of rides like Skyrush (also my #1 steel), you need to get to Mexico City and ride Medusa Steel Coaster. It very nearly toppled Skyrush from my top spot and if it had a traditional, airtime-laden first drop rather than the rollover, it would have. That ride is NUTS.

Plus I'll take Texas over Southern California any day...friendlier people and much better food. I need me some Tex-Mex and a Whataburger.

I can handle life without Whataburger. Yeah, I miss it, but so many other things are higher on the list of things I crave right now...

like free chips and salsa at Mexican restaurants. Last place we went charged $6 for C&S and it wasn't even salsa, it was pico de gallo. The food was good, though... just not like home.

Tried to make chorizo and egg breakfast tacos the other day and found that it was Spanish chorizo, not Mexican. Huge difference. I think I found a market that sells Mexican chorizo, but it's all the way across town. I'll likely wait until I have my own car and better weather to venture over there.

I did manage to make some killer salsa, though, so there's that. I'll just have chips and salsa at home before I go out for Mexican food.
