Anticipointment/What a surprise/Just what I expected

Enthusiast coaster & amusement park chatter about whatever. If it's not about coasters & parks, it'll go to the garbage file. Keep it on-topic and flame-retardant, please.

Anticipointment/What a surprise/Just what I expected

Post by CptBeeble » Mon Oct 28, 2013 6:13 am

Sometimes, there's a coaster that makes nearly everyone's top ten list, that is legendary for its ride, that you finally get to ride.... and it's just ok. Not bad, but certainly not epic.

Then there are rides that you rarely see in top tens and don't hear much about, and you ride them expecting to just add it to your list and move on, but you're blown away by how good it is.

Finally, there are rides that get hyped and when you ride them, they totally live up to it and end up being just what you thought they'd be.

So: whare are one or two coasters that gave you anticipointment, what were the pleasant surprises, and what ones hit the mark like you expected?

For me:

ANTICIPOINTMENT

West Edmonton Mindbender - there's a great ride there for sure, but the restraints killed it for me
Ghost Rider - maybe I just got a bad ride, but I didn't think much of it
The Ultimate - I know people who HATE this ride. I don't get it. I could ride this thing all day and still want more

WHAT A SURPRISE

Prowler - I expected to like it, I didn't expect it to be in my top ten
Patriot - why this doesn't get more love, I'll never know. Great ride
Coaster at Playland PNE - figured I'd like it because nostalgia. Ended up solidly top ten because OMFG airtime/laterals
Ice Mountain Bobsled - more fun than a kiddie coaster should be allowed to be

YEP, THOUGHT SO

Outlaw Run - it really IS that good
Iron Rattler - after a year of NTG rides, iRat did exactly what I expected it to do
Wooden Warrior - worth a trip to Quassy all by itself

Anticipointment:

El Toro @ SFGAdv : horrible restraints
Superman/Bizarro @SFNE : see above.
Dragon Kahn : was too "been there done that" for me

What a surprise:

Boulder Dash (and I had high expectations already!)
Wooden Warrior (wow!)
Prowler (so impressive considering its height)
Phantoms' Revenge (airtime on a Morgan? Who would have thought?)

Lived up to the hype:

Voyage
Top Thrill Dragster
Millennium Force

Anticipointment:

Thunderbolt at Kennywood - Not the insane terrain coaster that I was lead to be.

El Toro at SFGRAd - Painful and not that fun.

What A Surprise:

Jaguar at KBF - Stupid fun.

Thunder Run At Canada's Wonderland - Fun theming and the best powered coaster ever.

Yep Thought So:

Outlaw Run - Jim already said it. :-)

The Coney Island Cyclone - brutal and insane...loved it.

That's all I can think of now after a long day at work.

BTW great thread Jim.

After having walked Prowler during construction I had no doubt it would be a kick ass amazing ride. Honestly it doesn't get more respect because it is way out in Kansas City and not on the coasts.

Let down a little:
Dragon at Adventureland, after hearing how awesome it was by locals.

What a surprise!
Legend at Arnold's Park, it is rarely talked about, but it was amazingly fun!
TNT at SDC, I never thought that it would be as cool as it was.

Yep, I knew it would:
POS at NickU, it was fun and a nice park view, but nothing I didn't expect.

I like this thread.

ANTICIPOINTMENT
Renegade: Paul and I made a trip to ride Renegade a week after it opened. It lacked the air most GCI's deliver. Where I thought there would be air, there was not.
Space Mountain: I rode it as a kid and loved it. When I rode as an adult, the magic was not there.
Thunderhead: I know people will disagree with me here. To be fair I only rode it 6-7 times on one day. I'd love to ride again and plan to someday.

WHAT A SURPRISE
Excalibur @ Valley Fair. Wow! What a great coaster. Not quite a mine train, not quite a big thrill coaster, but loads of fun.
Oz Cat: I thought it would be good, but it was truly exceptional!
Titan: Again, I thought it would be good, but I had no idea how forceful it would be after the MCBR. Love it!

YEP, THOUGHT SO
Phoenix
El Toro
Mindbender @ SFOG
Outlaw Run, P-Keg, Wildfire, TNT (love SDC coasters)
Whizzer: As a kid I remember loving the Zambezi Zinger at WOF, so when I finally made it to SFGAM, I was excited for Whizzer. It's my favorite ride in the park.
All Gravity Group coasters
There are so many more

^ I'm still so disappointed that I never got to ride Zambezi Zinger. I think removing that Coaster was a huge mistake on WOF's part.

Greg I had forgotten about our run in with Renegade as it didn't even vaguely perform then or make an impression and it has not improved in any way in my subsequent visit. The rides that did blow me away there were Excalibur as it is an Arrow Mine Train on crack and the Arrow Mad Mouse which is wicked fun.

That was a really fun trip with Valleyfair, Mall Of America and the Dells. We should do that again sometime.
