Top Five Wood: current and forever

Enthusiast coaster & amusement park chatter about whatever. If it's not about coasters & parks, it'll go to the garbage file. Keep it on-topic and flame-retardant, please.

Top Five Wood: current and forever

Post by CptBeeble » Thu Jul 25, 2013 6:17 am

How about two top-five woodie lists from everyone:
The first is your current top five coasters in general, among those that are still operating and can be ridden now.
The second is your top five that includes every coaster you've been on, even if it's long gone, plus specifying a particular year and/or other stuff - because we know that some coasters are great one year and terrible later...

I'll start:

Current:
[1] Voyage
[2] El Toro
[3] Boulder Dash
[4] Wodan
[5] Prowler

All-time:
[1] Voyage (still good enough to be #1 when it's running well)
[2] Texas Giant (1990 version)
[3] Texas Cyclone (1976 version)
[4] MegaZeph (opening season in the back seat, OMFG)
[5] The Beast (any time between opening season and when they braked it to death)

I should add that if I combine my lists, El Toro would slot at #6, behind all four of the coasters from my past.
It's kinda sad when I make my top ten lists and realize how many of my all-time favorite coasters are gone.... or at least won't ever run the way they did when they first made the list.

Current

T1. Voyage
T2. Outlaw Run
3. El Toro
4. Viper Backwards (Great America)
5. Prowler

All Time

T1. Voyage
T2. Outlaw Run
3. El Toro
4. American Thunder
5. Viper Backwards

Yes, yes, I know making Voyage and Outlaw Run a tie for first place is sorta a cop out.

WOW, Screamin' Eagle higher than Legend and Raven?
I haven't ridden it in a bunch of years, it looks like I need to get back out there.

If you ride in the back seat there are some really good ejector air time in some spots. Mostly after the turns.

A bit more challenging of an idea than I expected it to be.

Current
1. Voyage
2. Zippin Pippin
3. El Toro
4. Phoenix
5. Prowler

All time
1. Voyage, because it was the first coaster to ever blow my mind
2. Son of Beast with the loop, because it was the first coaster I ever followed the construction of and opened when I was just starting to become an "enthusiast"
3. The Beast, the coaster that introduced me to major coasters and made me fall in love with them, and still holds a place dear in my heart as the coaster I "grew up with"
4. Original Zippin Pippin, my first classic and first experience with buzz bars
5. Recar, aka the Racer backwards, the coaster that really got me over my fear of coasters and the reason I love backwards coasters.
Current coaster count: 304

I haven't been on the new ZPip yet, but when I rode the original, the two high school kids who were running the coaster got into a shouting match as we were going up the lift. It was my umpteenth ride on it that day, as there were no crowds and there wasn't much else there to warrant repeat rides... anyway, we had seen this animosity of the ride ops developing over a few hours. The shouting match, then, wasn't a big surprise.

What WAS a big surprise was that their argument consumed their attention and neither of them noticed that the train had come back and was already well into the area with the skid brakes before the station. (For those who never got to ride it, there were skids in the straight track before the station and the station was curved with more skids there. The lift came right after the station.) A bunch of people on the train and in the station all started shouting and pointing and from my spot in the back seat, I saw one of the ride ops go white and his jaw drop. His face obviously caused the other ride op to suddenly piece together what was happening and both of them ran for the big brake handle. Too late, we were already way too far past that section to stop the train, but the back car caught a bit of the skids and it slowed us down just a smidgen.
Luckily, the train isn't going THAT fast coming into the station anyway, because both the ride ops ran for the handle for the early skids and not the station skids. We rolled right through the station (laterals!) and several feet up the lift, beginning our second consecutive ride.

I don't think we were in any real danger as I'm sure there are upstops in the station too, but it was plenty scary enough for the people in the station, most of whom had abandoned the platform by the time we got back in. I'm betting that those two lost their jobs that day. I didn't get back in line to see if they were still there later.

Current:

1. Outlaw Run
2. Voyage
3. Boulder Dash
4. Goliath at SFOG
5. Raven

All time:

1. The Whizzer
2. Greezed Lightning at SFAW
3. Scorpion at BGT
4. The Raven
5. XLR-8 at SFAW

As you can see I am an Anton Fan. The Raven is on my all time list because it is the first wooden coaster that really blew me away. It was a religious experience. XLR-8 is in there because it was such a cool ride to stumble on and swinging back and forth between supports especially near the end of the ride was a blast.

Have fun!
