Are Six Flags New Super Loop/Ring Of Fire Rides Coasters?

What's in planning, what's being built now, what's rumored.

Are Six Flags New Super Loop/Ring Of Fire Rides Coasters?

Post by Paul Drabek » Thu Aug 28, 2014 11:31 am

This morning Six Flags announced their new for 2015 additions and SFOG, SFGrAd, SFA and SFDK are getting Larson Super Loops. It is weird enough having a huge park chain adding such so low capacity rides but what really takes the cake is they are calling them "roller coasters".

Now I know there are some credit whores out there who count a coaster multiple times if it is moved or if they change restraints but I have never heard anyone count a Super Loop or a Ring Of Fire as a coaster. RCDB does not list Super Loop's or Ring of Fire rides as coasters. The American Coaster Enthusiast has never had exclusive ride on a Super loop or Ring of Fire at any of it's conventions. None of the established enthusiasts or experts consider these rides coasters so what does the Man on the street think?

So I decided his morning while doing some overtime to do a survey of non coaster enthusiasts here at work if a Super Loop/Ring of Fire is considered by the general public as a "roller coaster"

Of the 8 people I surveyed all 8 were men, 6 were fathers, 2 were single and all were aged 25-45.

The first question asked is would you consider a Super Loop/Ring of Fire type ride a "roller coaster"?

100% of respondents said that it was NOT a roller coaster.

75% of respondents stated that it was "a carny ride" in a cheep and derogatory way.

These rides might have done well if it was part of a flat ride package with multiple rides since it is not any sort of high capacity ride. Parks like Great Escape and Over Georgia need capacity and this new "coaster" does not have it. Also with a clear majority of people thinking these are cheap "carny" rides are they really going to have a good experience paying to get into Six Flags for a new "coaster" only to find a ride that they drove past in a K-Mart parking lot?

I just hope they don't continue these to other Parks in 2016 i.e. SFStL.......

If SFStL wants a looping flat ride I'm all for a Looping Starship as those are fun but I have never been impressed with Super Loops or Ring of Fire rides.

Six Flags really needs to start reading more of our survey responses.

Glad to see the RMC conversions and dark ride upgrades. Dislike the carnival rides.

Someone at Larson deserves a huge pay raise. They obviously "sold" these well.

Oh yeah. I bet they are sitting some island in the Caribbean enjoying a nice vacation from their commission.

Didn't Elitch get one of these this year already?

Didn't they have major downtime issues with it?

Am I misremembering any of this, or was that actually a thing?

I had to laugh a little at the over the top attempt to make a carnival ride seem cool. It brought back memories of Boomerang coolest coaster to hit SFStL ... Mrs. Gump who knows a little about coasters was even like, wait that's not a coaster. On another note I hope the new Justice League works out, as far as theme goes it does fit a little better in that spot.
