Sometime during the winter of 2006/2007 Greg announced on the Negative-G
Forums that he had to go ride the Boardwalk Bullet down in Texas
and wanted to know who was interested in joining him for an extreme road
trip. It was extreme as we'd leave St. Louis on a Thursday, drive
down all night to the Houston area to spend the day at Kemah riding the
Boardwalk Bullet and then go up to Six Flags Over Texas the next Day and
then hit Magic Springs in Arkansas on the way back. As crazy
as the whole trip sounded I was so in.
So after working all night long, getting Bond off to school, packing up,
having lunch with Carrie and then driving to St. Louis I should have
been so exhausted that I'd sleep through the twelve hour drive down to
Houston. Well after meeting up at Greg's house with Kevin and
hitting the road there was no sleep for me. This was the 4th of
July, Thanksgiving and Christmas all rolled up into one big coaster
filled weekend so why sleep?
On the way down we of course chatted coasters, listened to music
(including my mix-CD of Texas tunes) and watched National Lampoon's
Vacation. When we planned the trip we figured if we left St. Louis when
we did we'd get to the Houston area around 5am. Since the Kemah
Boardwalk wouldn't open up until 10 I asked if the guys wanted to one of
my favorite hang outs when I lived in Houston back in the late 1980's.
So we headed on down to Galveston island and lick had it we got there
just in time to see the sun rise over the Gulf of Mexico.
Watching the sky go from pitch black to being full of light of from
a rising sun over the surf and
sand really was a fantastic way to start off the weekend.
After a while walking around we grabbed some breakfast from an IHOP right
on the beach then drove around Galveston for a while before heading up
to Kemah to watch the sun rise a bit higher over the Boardwalk Bullet.
